November Swans

8.11.95

Nine swans long
Languid silent sweep
Whiteness set
against a grey November sky

Below
green and golden pink
runs and rills of trees
in glowing leaf

sharp quacks
gull calls
whining honks
moorcock squeaks

a busyness around the mere
Landing flights of geese
Clumsy ducks flapping
sizzling along the water
Moorhens scuttling
floating in the overhang

Nine swans long
overseeing autumn
